Tonsil surgery?

Question by megbri: Tonsil surgery?
Do doctors commonly use removing tonsils and adenoids as a way to reduce snoring (or just breathing loud/hard while asleep)?
I ask because doctors suggested it when I was little (so my mom just told me), and I wondered if it is commonly used today as the same reason. Plan to talk with my doctor, but was just CURIOUS.

  1. My daughter had hers removed at 5 years old because they would get enlarged causing her to snore very loudly which affected her ability to sleep well…She has allergies, which was the cause of the tonsils/adenoid problem.

  2. I dont know about now, but they used to. I had both my adenoids and tonsils removed in the early 80s for this reason. I breathed heavily, and mostly couldnt breath through my nose at all – only through my mouth. So that was the solution. I still snore though. Not loudly, but I still snore.

  3. Yes is removed even for that reason. But in early age they remove as one kid might start getting lot of allergies.

  4. It depends entirely upon the surgeon, ENT, etc. that you see… Sorry, I realize that is not much help, but the doctors I have worked with are all so different. One removes them for everything and anything. The next, may only remove if there is serious obstruction of the airway.

    Good Luck

  5. I’ve heard that with the adenoids but not for the tonsils. I had mine removed when I was a kid. That was because I got sore throats all the time.

  6. Not very popular surgery this days, as tonsil are known to be a very important part of the immunological system.

A good physician would recommend other ways to heal those problems.

  7. they remove your tonsils if u are getting sick from them because it has some kind of bacteria that is making u sick and i know this cause i had them taken out and they don’t take out your tonsils cause u snore

  8. The doctors do so only if the tonsils and adenoids are so enlarged that they block your air passages.

  9. Tonsils when Removed do reduce snorning and many other things but when there not removed they can cause problems. With Your throat and make it harder to breath and it causes more seliva to stick to your tonsils cause bad breathing Problems and it feels like a hair ball is stuck up there. There are lots of tonsil diseases all can be Prevented when you remove your tonsils.

In overall doctors do remove tonsils for the reasons you have.

  10. My tonsils were removed when I was very young (in 1969) because of acute tonsilitis, today at 46 i’m no worse for wear
